Why Are Thorough Pre-Purchase Inspections Important?

A pre-purchase inspection is important because a UTV or ATV can look clean on the outside but still have expensive problems hiding in the engine, clutching, drivetrain, suspension, frame, or electrical system. A proper inspection helps identify signs of abuse, poor maintenance, accident damage, overheating, worn driveline components, fluid leaks, and other issues that may not be obvious during a quick walkaround. Spending a little money before buying can save thousands in repairs later and gives the buyer a better idea of whether the machine is a good deal, needs negotiation, or should be avoided.

For the test drive, don't just idle it around the block. After the machine is fully warmed up and in a safe/legal area, it should be driven through normal low-speed operation, steering, braking, shifting, reverse, and 4WD if equipped. It should also be accelerated hard enough to put the engine, clutch, belt, and transmission under real load. A brief "hammer down" pull can reveal problems that light driving will not, such as clutch slipping, belt squeal, engine misfire, hesitation, turbo/boost issues, transmission noise, driveline vibration, or the machine falling on its face under load. Do this with the seller's permission, in an open area, and without abusing the machine. The goal is to confirm it operates properly under real riding conditions.
